Meet the Artist: Maré Simonet

Maré Simonet is a poet and artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although the artist has reported that she was born with a paintbrush in her left hand, she truly began to develop her craft when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

Forced into early retirement from teaching due to complications of the disease, and with time on her hands, Simonet began raiding the recycling bin at her brother’s house, re-using pieces of construction paper from her nephew’s cast-off school projects. She re-defined her creative process by ‘sketching’ with paper and scissors. Twelve years later, she has developed a unique style of pop-up, “paper gestures”, painting, print-making, photography and collage.
