“The Soul of America,” by Will Foreman and and Travis Dow

There is a land where roses grow, and people think of life as art,

Eternal summer, pretty parks, with lovely cities here and there…

But from their soil springs the wealth that sets the people far apart

And in our nights…the distant cries…are asking if we care…

Native people, our nation owes a debt to you

We were driven by our greed and by our fear

To try the soul of this world we called new

Though more than ten thousand years you’ve been here.

There’s a shadow in the Soul of America

It’s there in all the faces that we see

We want to know the meaning of democracy…

And we long to solve the mystery…of our destiny…

We lived in peace among the trees, between the shores of golden seas

Until our nation came apart, our people fought…and many died

And then we set our guns aside, and trees began to grow new leaves,

And like an idea never tried, a vision that we love…survived…

There is a shadow in the Soul of America

and it’s there in all the faces that we see

There’s a mem-ory of slaves in America

and their children still struggle to be free

Yes, there’s a hole in the flag of democracy

When we can’t make elections truly fair

When the enemy that hounds us is hypocrisy…

Will we rise up and show the world we dare?

Then in the World Wars one-two-three, we fought to save democracy,

Our people good, intentions fair, but there were questions in the air,

How can we know who rules us now? And will we find the truth somehow?

How do we make elections fair? What greater purpose shall we share?

There’s a shadow in the Soul of America

It’s there in all the faces that we see

We want to know the meaning of democracy…

And we long to solve the mystery…of our destiny…

So let us choose our destiny, strike shadows from

our legacy,

Return like whispers in the trees, like roses float on

golden seas

And in the darkness of the night, we’re sure to find

we’re not alone…

That every eye turns toward the light…when the

order of the night is…overthrown…
